NMSC Mar/97 Newsletter

Swimming and Broccoli . . .

This newsletter often runs articles encouraging members (especially new members) to enter meets or to otherwise push themselves to be their best. In the interest of balance, this article provides reassurance that non-competitive swimmers belong in the club too.

Our club constitution says "The object of Masters shall be to promote fitness and recreation through swimming, using competition only for those who wish to participate to measure their achievement level". To me, swimming is like eating broccoli: I do it because it's good for me, and it's more palatable than some of the alternatives. However, I'd really rather be reading a book and eating junk food.

So if you prefer not to compete, feel comfortable with your choice -- you're actually in the majority at NMSC. And if you do want to compete, you have my full support. You might even see me on deck cheering you on (usually with a couple of stopwatches in hand).

Allen Trafford, NMSC Past-President
